One of the most handy features of any touch screen laptop computer is the ability to write on the touch screen with the digital stylus and have that it recognize your handwriting and convert it into text. This technology has really involved a lot in the recent year. Early software applications that recognized handwriting were plagued with problems. Advancements in the technology and quality of touch screens has made the accuracy of handwriting recognition programs much better.

There are some things to keep in mind if you are buying a touch screen laptop for the purpose of using the handwriting recognition feature. The first is that you should buy a touch screen laptop that has what is called an active digitizer touch screen. If you buy one that has a passive digitizer you will not be happy with the results. A passive digitizer recognizes touch input from your finger or a stylus. The problem that this presents is that as you are writing on the touch screen your palm will inevitably rub on the screen. This will confuse the touch screen into thinking that your palm is actually making a selection on the screen and the handwriting recognition will not work properly.

Acted digitizer touch screens solve this problem because they only recognize input from an electronic stylus. Therefore you can swivel the monitor and fold it flat so that your laptop is in tablet mode and write on the screen quite easily.

Modern handwriting recognition software is quite advanced. When you first start using it you will have to go through a brief training period. During this time you will write a set of words on the screen that the software will instruct you to write. For example, the software might ask you to write the phrase ” the dog climbs the tree”. The software will be expecting you to write that phrase and when you do, it will compare your handwriting with what it expected to find and actually learn your particular handwriting style. After you perform the training exercises, the handwriting recognition software will become much more accurate.

Some advanced handwriting recognition programs will actually learn from you as you use it. For example if you are writing a letter and you noticed that the handwriting recognition software made an error in transcribing your handwriting into text, you can correct that the error and the handwriting recognition will not make the same mistake again.

Really advanced handwriting recognition programs will actually recognize cursive writing. When you think about it, this is actually quite a feat. Think of the last time you tried to read someone’s cursive writing. Everybody tends to have their own style and now day’s most people type on laptops or desktop computers. Consequently their handwriting skills have deteriorated. It’s quite amazing that a software application can actually recognize cursive writing and transcribe it into text.

It’s a good idea to try before you buy when it comes to handwriting recognition programs. Most quality touchscreen laptops will come with handwriting recognition software. Give it a try and see how it works. Keep in mind that the store display model will not have been through the training process with you so it might not be as accurate as it will be after you do the training.

The technology driving touch screen laptop computers have really benefited from the advancement in both the resolution department as well as touch recognition sensitivity. Older touch screen systems such as the resistive and capacitive systems limited the brightness of the display because of the conductive sheets required to make the screen recognize touch commands.

But with newer technology products like the HP touch screen laptops advertise themselves as computer with excess capacity to fully support multimedia. In fact, many of HP’s computers are centered around media and the notion that their consumers are looking at their computers as a means of interacting and enjoying resource intensive multimedia machines. The improved screen resolution and brightness has given this particular brand that advantage.

Not only has the screen’s display been improved to provide brighter, richer colors at high definition resolution but the sensitivity to render touch commands has also taken off. Some screens are now getting really good at differentiating between intentional touch commands and unintentional accidental touches on the screen. While these kinks are still being perfected they are definitely getting there. Greater touch sensitivity means better response to commands and that means much less frustration to the user.

Another showing of the power of advancement in touch technology is the multi-touch function that almost every modern screen offers these days. This is the ability to use more than one point of contact to further manipulate the objects on the screen almost the same as a person would in real life. Multi-touch allows the users to zoom, pan and flip through media as it recognizes the difference between tapping, dragging and pulling. It also will recognize different commands with different tools. Touches with the finger, used to manipulate objects, are different from a stylus which would be used to draw and write. User experience is greatly enhanced as touch screens have become better at reading user input.
